Personal Brand Under SEC Rules: 15 Reels in 6 Days
Personal Brand Under SEC Rules: 15 Reels in 6 Days
Every post she makes is legally an advertisement. Here is the system that lets her publish anyway.
Every post she makes is legally an advertisement. Here is the system that lets her publish anyway.
The Challenge
Rebakah Obinma is a wealth coach for athletes. She played Division I basketball at Pepperdine, TCU and Notre Dame, transferred, got injured, and watched NIL money land in locker rooms where nobody knew what to do with it. Then she went and got licensed on purpose.
She is also a registered investment adviser, and that second fact deletes most of the personal branding playbook before you start. Every public post promoting advisory services is an advertisement under SEC Rule 206(4)-1. No return figures. No guarantees. No client praise, because a repost becomes a testimonial. Most short form finance content on the internet would be a violation if she made it.
On top of that: about 2,000 followers on a personal Instagram built for friends rather than for a practice, roughly 15 posts, no content system, no capture, and a pipeline that ran entirely on referral. Real, but not repeatable, and not something she controls.
The Hypothesis
The constraint is not an obstacle to work around. It is the strategy. If she can never recommend a product and never promise an outcome, the only content left is the content that actually builds trust: her own story, and mechanics anyone can verify.
Tax is the hook. NIL income is 1099 income. Nothing is withheld, and nobody explains it at signing. It is the most searched, least served question her audience has, and every answer is IRS published fact rather than advice.
Protection is the product. Explained as education, never as a recommendation. Describe how a thing works, never tell anyone to buy it.
Assets are the annuity. Advisory relationships compound over twenty years, which is why a result in December is a household rather than a follower count.
Two calls shaped the distribution. The athlete is the audience, the parent is the buyer, so every piece is written to the athlete and engineered to be forwarded to the parent. And LinkedIn is the money channel, because parents, agents and athletic directors are there and almost no adviser is speaking to them. Instagram carries the brand, LinkedIn carries the pipeline.
What We Built
Six days from signature. Everything below exists as a delivered artifact, not a plan to make one.
Brand foundation. Thesis, voice, audience, colour and type system. White dominant, ink, one pink accent per frame.
Fifteen reel scripts. Hook, full script, on screen text, shot note and a per script compliance ruling, across four pillars.
Filming day one. All fifteen shot to script in 4K, two wardrobe looks, plus stills for the new profile and b roll for Stories.
The compliance layer. Restricted language list, source on screen rule, caption disclosure wording, and a written DM reply that refuses personalised advice and offers a call instead.
Captions and hashtag sets. Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn versions for all fifteen, rebuilt against Instagram's five hashtag cap that the first drafts would have failed.
Comment to DM system. One keyword per reel, each with its own approved auto reply.
Content plan on SRG+. Fifteen client visible records carrying hook, script, production spec, captions and compliance note.
Podcast show concept. Fourteen candidate names searched against live feeds on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. Nine ruled out on collision, five cleared. Episode architecture, question set, cut plan and on screen graphics.
Revenue and distribution plan. Offer architecture, platform roles, an eight week calendar covering 36 assets, and the warm outreach track that runs beside the content.
In production. Instagram profile conversion, and the application funnel and CRM on GoHighLevel.
Scheduled. One podcast pilot, branded and distributed to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube, in week six.
The Part That Actually Sells This
Anyone can shoot fifteen reels. The work in this engagement is that a regulated professional can post all fifteen without her compliance officer stopping her, and that the rules are written down so the next hundred pieces do not need the conversation again.
Cannot be said, on camera or in a caption: guaranteed, guarantee, safe returns, no risk, risk-free, can't lose, beat the market, outperform, passive income with no downside. No specific return figure, past or projected. No best or top advisor language about herself. No client names, client outcomes, or anything a client said.
Required on every piece: source named on screen for every figure, disclosure line in the caption and doubled on anything tax adjacent, posts and Stories archived because Stories are advertisements too, business DMs archived because a portfolio conversation in a DM is a business record, and never an answer in comments or DMs that amounts to a recommendation.
Every Number She Is Allowed To Use
Women's college basketball drafted to the WNBA: 0.8%. Men's drafted to the NBA: 1.0%. Playing professionally anywhere: 9.1% and 21.8%. Source: NCAA.
Self employment tax on NIL income: 15.3%. Source: IRS.
Quarterly estimated tax deadlines: April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15. Source: IRS.
Product received in a deal is taxable at fair market value. Source: IRS.
NCAA Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Program: five sports, up to a 24 month term. Source: NCAA.
If a script needs a number that is not on this list, the script does not get the number. It gets flagged.
The Fifteen
Four pillars, ordered so the shoot opened with the four she could say without a teleprompter. Confidence first, precision later.
Watch the finished cuts: Rebakah Obinma, 15x Reels Campaign.
Her story. Reintroduction. I lived the risk. Three schools, three lessons. Why not the easy path.
How athlete money actually works. NIL money is 1099 money. The set-aside. Four dates. The free stuff is not free.
Risk and protection. Less than one percent. The NCAA program nobody mentions. One question before you sign. Disability vs loss of value.
Network and positioning. To the agents. To the parents. The connector.
One reel is worth noticing because it is not here. Disability vs loss of value is a strong topic, it is already filmed, and it is sitting on a shelf until she can defend every sentence to her underwriters. Holding an asset back is part of the service.

The Ninety Days
18 September. Engagement starts. One quarter covering brand, content, funnel, CRM, filming and a podcast pilot.
19 September. Filming day one. All fifteen scripts shot.
23 to 24 September. The system lands: captions, compliance wording, keyword automation, content plan, podcast concept, revenue and distribution plan.
30 September to 4 October. Soft launch. Profile conversion live, first three reels out.
5 October to 29 November. Eight week publishing run, 36 assets, with the warm outreach track in parallel.
Early November. Basketball season opens and the parent and agent reels lead the week.
Week six. Podcast pilot, plus ten clips and a trailer cut from it.
1 to 5 December. Review, with two clean weeks left in the contract to act on what it says.
What Counts As A Result
Three levels get reported every Wednesday. Reach is views, followers and watch through: easy to move and easy to mistake for progress. Intent is saves, shares, profile visits, link clicks and keyword comments. Revenue is calls booked and held, qualified households, protection applications and assets committed.
Only the third one settles whether the quarter worked, and saying so at the start is what makes the December conversation possible. The target is not twenty clients. In a practice where a relationship runs twenty years or more, two or three right households repay a quarter like this several times over. That is the honest frame, and we set it before there was anything to report.
Coming To This Page
This case updates as the quarter runs. Still to come: the profile before and after, ten carousels and LinkedIn long form posts, the podcast pilot with its trailer and clips, the funnel screens, and confirmed results in December 2026.
Figures cited on this page come from the NCAA Probability of Competing Beyond High School dataset and from IRS published guidance. Nothing on this page is investment, tax or legal advice, and nothing here is a claim about investment results.
